How We Measure Impact

  • Baseline established with partner schools

  • Outcomes monitored (agreed indicators)

  • Data reviewed and reported in cycles

  • Evidence stored and available for funder review

Change tracked across participating partner schools

Teen Pregnancies

Teen Pregnancies

Teen Pregnancies

This slide highlights one of the most significant psychosocial outcomes of the YOSA programme – a sustained reduction in teenage pregnancies across YOSA‑supported high schools.

                                            33 (2018) → 1 (2025)

Substance Abuse

Teen Pregnancies

Teen Pregnancies

The data represents the distinct number of learners found using or under the influence of substances at school, tracked annually across YOSA‑supported high schools.

                                                 43 (2018) → 3 (2025)

Mental Health

The total number of learners seeking counselling across all YOSA‑supported schools has decreased substantially, indicating improved emotional regulation, coping skills, and resilience among learners.

Matric Results & University Acceptance

Across YOSA‑supported schools, we see a clear improvement in matric pass rates over time, with several schools achieving significant gains by 2025.
In addition, YOSA learners are increasingly accessing tertiary opportunities, with over 160 university acceptances recorded across the schools, alongside learners completing qualifications, securing employment, and even starting their own ventures.
These outcomes demonstrate how YOSA’s integrated academic, psychosocial, and digital support translates into real, long‑term educational and economic opportunities for young people.”

What the Data Represents

Learning Support

Psychosocial Support

Psychosocial Support

Strengthening Academic Foundations Within the School Environment

Learning Support is delivered directly within partner schools.

It focuses on reinforcing academic capability while strengthening long-term learner resilience.

Core Functions

Curriculum Reinforcement
Targeted support aligned to the school curriculum to strengthen foundational competencies in core subjects.

Academic Progression Support
Guidance that helps learners sustain performance across grade levels and transition points.

Learner Engagement
Structured academic engagement to build discipline, focus, and study habits.

Educator Collaboration
Working alongside teachers to align support with classroom priorities and identify learners requiring structured intervention.

Why This Matters

Academic underperformance is rarely an isolated issue. By reinforcing core learning foundations within the school system itself, YOSA strengthens both learner competence and institutional capacity.

This structured reinforcement contributes directly to improved academic results reflected in impact data.

Psychosocial Support

Addressing Barriers That Undermine Academic and Personal Development

Psychosocial Support is delivered through in-school social work services embedded within partner schools.

This pillar recognises that emotional instability, trauma, behavioural challenges, and substance exposure directly undermine educational outcomes.

Core Functions

In-School Social Work Services
Professional psychosocial support available within the school environment.

Counselling and Emotional Support
Structured engagement addressing trauma, behavioural instability, and personal vulnerability.

Substance Abuse Intervention
Preventative and responsive strategies aimed at reducing substance exposure and incidents within school grounds.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Context
Holistic support structures that contribute to reduced teenage pregnancy rates through stabilised school engagement and strengthened personal development.

Anti-Bullying and Behavioural Programmes
Structured behavioural reinforcement within schools to promote safer learning environments.

Parent Engagement
Engaging families to strengthen stability beyond the classroom.

Why This Matters

The measurable reduction from 33 to 1 teen pregnancies and from 43 to 3 substance abuse incidents demonstrates the structural effectiveness of stabilising the learner’s social and emotional environment.

Psychosocial Support does not operate as crisis response alone. It is preventative, embedded, and sustained.

Digital Labs & Skills Development

YOSA’s Digital Labs are structured, school-based digital learning environments embedded within partner schools. They provide supervised access to technology, curriculum-aligned learning support and foundational digital skills development.

The labs form part of YOSA's broader academic and psychosocial model, reinforcing learner engagement, competence and future readiness.

Core Functions

Digital Literacy Support
Structured exposure to digital tools strengthens learner engagement in modern learning environments.

Digital Labs provide supervised access to computers, online resources and foundational digital skills training. Learners develop practical competencies in research, communication and productivity tools — building confidence and future readiness.

Technology-Enhanced Learning Reinforcement
Digital tools reinforce academic content and improve access to learning materials.

Learners use curriculum-aligned platforms for homework support and guided research, extending classroom learning within a structured, supervised environment.

Why This Matters

In high-risk communities, limited access to technology and digital skills widens inequality and restricts academic progression and future opportunity.

Digital Labs close this access gap. They strengthen learner competence and confidence, improve engagement and build practical skills required for further education and employment.

By embedding digital capability within the school ecosystem, YOSA supports both immediate academic performance and long-term socio-economic mobility.
